The longer version
When we move your account to a new retailer, that retailer pays us. The payment has two parts:
- Upfront commission — paid when you sign on. Sized roughly to the first quarter or year of consumption.
- Trail commission — paid as a small per-kWh amount over the life of the contract.
Your rate is your rate. The commission doesn't add to it — it comes from the retailer's margin, not your bill. There's no fee on your invoice from us. We don't send you invoices at all.

On any quote, you can ask the exact commission we'd be paid on the deal. We'll show you the maths. The reason we do that: transparency is our only durable competitive advantage against bigger national brokers who don't.
Why doesn't this make us biased?
Two reasons. First, commission rates across our retailer panel are broadly similar — we don't have a strong financial reason to push one retailer over another. Second, our business model is recurring trail commission and renewals. If we recommend a bad deal, you churn at renewal and we lose the trail. The incentives line up.
Compliance
Smarta Switch follows the National Customer Code for Energy Brokers (the voluntary code published by The Energy Charter) and complies with Australian Consumer Law on misleading and deceptive conduct — including around the word "free." If we ever say a service is free, we mean it. If we ever take a fee directly from you, this page changes first.
